One of Imam al-Ghazalis رضي الله عنه advanced students wrote to the Imam with a question:
“From all the fields of knowledge what will benefit us in the grave?”
The questioner was aware of the longer works (such as Ihya Uloom al-Deen – Rejuvenation of the Religious Sciences) but he wished for the Imam to furnish him with a short response which he could use in his daily life and to constantly refer to.
‘Oh My Dear Son’ is the response of the Imam to this question. This short exposition will help us understand the importance of time and prioritising the most important forms of worship in our lives. The role of knowledge for the student and how to implement Prophetic etiquettes of everyday life in accordance with the Sunnah; and hopes to inspire a zeal for spiritual excellence.
