Before we can change a society, a community, or even our own households, we must first change ourselves. If we have traits that harm those around us, it is up to us to rectify this. Our difficulties are often related to those around us, but our responses can shape the way conflicts and interpersonal issues carry out… If we start with purifying our hearts, we start changing our lives and everything around us to align with the Prophetic Way.
“Indeed, Allāh will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves“
Without taking that first step inwards, to purify oneself, how can we expect those around us to change?
It all starts with looking inwards.
How can you identify what of yourself needs changing?
This can be broken down into 2 significant steps:
1. Look at the noble character traits of your brother and adopt those traits.
2. Look at the bad qualities in others and reject those traits for yourself.
“One believer is a mirror to another.” (Narrated by Abu Daud)
Acquiring sacred knowledge helps you develop an understanding of yourself and those around you, this is through learning the Prophetic character and manners of interaction, they all help you to be the best individual you can be. This in turn transfers to those around us, and helps to create a harmonious society, which has the Prophetic way at the core of it!
