Are Deobandis Part of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamah?

Are Deobandis Part of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamah? This is one of the questions that often arise among Muslims. This question has been answered by many scholars from different backgrounds and perspectives. In this article, we will present some of the evidences that confirm the Deobandi’s adherence to the creed and methodology of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamah.

The First Evidence

The first evidence is a book called Al-Muhannad ala ‘l-Mufannad, by Shaykh Mawlana Khalil Ahmad al-Saharanpuri. This book provides answers by Scholars of the Indian Subcontinent affiliated with Darul Uloom Deoband to questions regarding tawassul, visiting the grave of the Prophet SAW, the Prophets being alive in their graves, salawat, following one of the four madhabs, tasawwuf, celebrating the mawlid, the knowledge of the Prophet SAW, and the finality of prophethood. To gain clarity regarding the aqeeda of Deobandis, please see the answers to the following questions in this text: ‘If Allah SWT can lie’, ‘regarding Mawlid’, and ‘Abdul Wahhab and others.’

The Second Evidence

The second evidence is the testimony of Shaykh Abdul Hadi Kharsa, a renowned scholar from Syria. Shaykh Abdul Hadi Kharsa has read, and is aware of, the contents of Al-Muhannad ala ‘l-Mufannad and has said that they are among the Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamah.

The Third Evidence

The third evidence is the agreement of two other prominent scholars from Syria and Turkey, both Aqeeda specialists. They are Shaykh Usama Rifai, the Grand Mufti of Syria, and Shaykh Saleh al-Ghursi, a senior theologian and scholar of the rational sciences based in Konya. Both of them have affirmed their [Deobandi’s] belonging to the Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamah.

It is sufficient enough of an answer that the Grand Mufti of Syria has verified that Deobandis are part of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamah.

These are some of the proofs that show that Deobandi’s are part of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamah. As well as that they follow the same creed and methodology as the majority of Muslims throughout history. It is important to note that Islam is far bigger than these two groups. And that there should be unity among us as Muslims. The call is to Allah alone and we should strive to follow His guidance and obey His commands. May Allah guide us all to the truth and protect us from falsehood and disunity. Ameen.
